 STEM DISCOVERY CAMPAIGN BLOG

DROUGHT IN THE AGRICULTURE

About the Project :

The population of the world is increasing day by day, however the clean water supplies are disappearing. It is very important to save water since the drought will effect agriculture. Population is expected to increase to over 10 billion by 2050 and this population will need food. But if we do not save water, there will be no agriculture. Our international eTwinning project “The Silent Scream of Water” aims the importance of water and water saving. We study with international mixed school teams consisting of 2 schools from Portugal, 1 from Spain, 1 from Poland, 1 from Lithuania, 1 from Bosnia and Herzegovina and 10 from Turkey, consisting of a total of 17 teachers and 137 students. And as the April event, we study about “Water and Life” with mixed school teams.

THE AIMS OF THE PROJECT:

With this STEM project we aim to create an awareness on our students about the sustainability of water in agriculture based on STEM.

Our topics as the second mixed team:

  • How will agriculture be affected if water resources are reduced?
  • Is there an alternative substance to water for agriculture?
  • How does an increase in the salt content in the soil affect living life?
  • What are the reasons for increasing salinity in the soil?
  • How can we prevent the salinity that leads to drought in the soil?
  • Developing a solution to this problem

STEP 1

We raise awareness about the impact of drought on agriculture and we do this by observing the solutions to the drought in agriculture around the world. Also we will use animaker web 2.0 tool for this. Animaker is an enjoyable and useful web 2.0 tool, therefore the students used animaker for the presentation.

We give topics to the students and asked them to search for the information about the topics of our project and they prepared an animation presentation by editing the information collected from different sources. So first of all, they got the necessary information about the topics.

STEP 2

The students designed a digital escape room game so they draw attention to the importance of drought and water for the soil. They designed the game by preparing a story-based scenario about “the importance of water to the soil, drought and increase in salt content in the soil”. All project members have launched a challenge. The students played the game they have prepared, so the impact of such a project reached more student audiences .https://view.genial.ly/609516b82e2ba00d84d48ffe/presentation-the-silent-scream-of-water

STEP 3

The students prepared presentations about drought-stricking countries around the world and they used “Genially-web2.0 tool”. Our goal was to observe the situation clearly, so our students found all the information and the images of the countries around the world. These countries are suffering from water shortages and are currently experiencing drought. Drought is the whole world’s problem. If we do not protect the water, the soil will dry up, the salt content in the soil will increase and there will be no agriculture … We understand the importance water with this project because students see the visuals of the drought.

We have done a webinar and we talked about the steps of our studying :

INTEGRATION INTO COURSES:

English teachers can easily integrated this project into literacy and writing studies in English courses with the curriculum of all countries.

One can use drought in agriculture in Geography courses, so Geography teachers can use it in their courses.

The Biology teachers can integrated this study in Biology courses as it is related to living things.

In chemistry courses, you can use it as the increase in the salt content caused by dryness in the soil is related to chemistry.

THE SILENT SCREAM OF WATER-The STEM Discovery Campaign Blog

2.TEAM

”The SILENT SCREAM of WATER” is an international student communication and collaborative eTwinning project. In our project, teachers and students of 7 different countries, including Portugal, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Latvia, Spain, Poland and Turkey, conducted joint work on the theme of water literacy and water footprint. Our project consists of 137 students who study in high school and have an age range of 16-19 under the guidance of 19 teachers.

Importance Of water For Life

Water is the main source of life of living things. And nothing else can replace it. So it is the most important element after oxygen for human life. Water is an indispensable vital life support for all living things. It is found in the form of solid, liquid, gas in nature and exists in the life of living things with different sources.  In addition to its chemical and biological properties, water is an extremely effective value in the formation of civilizations, the formation of geographical and political boundaries.

Water Ratio in The World

Water covers three-quarters of the Earth’s surface. The total amount of water in the world is 1.4 million km3, and 97.5% of this water is salt water in the oceans. And of the remaining 2.5%, only 0.5% is available, while more than 90% of fresh water is at the poles and underground. We consume about 10% of the water in the world at homes, 70% in agriculture and 20% in industry.

On earth, especially drinkable water sources are rapidly polluting. Irregular urbanization, overpopulation, rising greenhouse gases and excessive industrialization are making the world increasingly “thirsty.” Some estimates suggest that over 3 billion people will face water shortages by 2025. What is happening is not a decrease in water, but an increase in the need for water. Due to the increasing population, climate change and rapid increase in consumption in economic processes, the future of water is negatively affected. Global warming and climate change are dragging the world into an uncertain future, threatening even water-rich countries.

Importance Of The Project:

Therefore, we must take care of the future of water and create urgent action plans. For this, we must support the training of individuals for careful use of water. Conscious use of water is only possible with knowledge of concepts such as water footprint and water literacy. We created this project to raise awareness about conscious water use for high school students. We aim for our students to learn the importance of water for living things. Also they will learn how it is polluted and how it should be protected. With water awareness, our students will also contribute to the conservation of the ecological system.

About The Event

Activities of our project in April were organized with the participation of students of the international mixed country team within the scope of “the 2021 STEM Discovery Campaign”. In the “Water and Life” study organized for this purpose, 5 different mixed country team students conducted studies together. Activities also defined special tasks related to the importance of water for living life and water sustainability. Team students performed tasks assigned by communication and cooperation.

“The SILENT SCREAM of WATER” Project 2. Team students ‘ studies on the importance of water in agriculture. Life is threatened by drought and it increases the salt content in the soil. Therefore 2.team students worked together to identify the effects of drought and salinity increases that threaten the soil on agriculture and to develop alternative solutions. This work will run from 1 to 30 April 2021 in the international 2. mixed country team conducted in collaboration with students

A Seed Story

Everything starts with a seed and the seed meets the soil. Then it takes the first life of water . It grows and becomes a seedling, then turns into a huge tree after many years. As the cycle continues in a way of health, soil, water and climate become friends with one another. A decrease in water resources causes drought in the soil but dry soil can not feed plants. A plant that cannot get enough water and minerals from the soil cannot continue to live . If the water runs out, the Earth dries up and then life ends. Project students drew pictures to tell the seed’s journey and they also created e-books by writing the story of a seed.

Alternative Farming Methods For Drought

We use 70% of fresh water in the world in the agricultural sector. 53% of this water is supplied from surface water sources and 38% from ground water. 82% of the irrigated agricultural areas are irrigated by Keel irrigation, 17% by sprinkler irrigation and 1% by drip irrigation. Numerical data show that irrigation used in agriculture threatens clean water skis. The establishment of economical irrigation systems in agriculture is of great importance. Project students explored alternative irrigation methods used around the world such as; rain irrigation, drip irrigation, desalination in water, collecting water in the air by conducting research on the irrigation techniques used to prepare an e-journal with sample applications.

A New Idea For Alternative Irrigation In Agriculture.

Project students developed solutions for creative irrigation methods using the knowledge obtained after their research. For this the students made agricultural field sketches using STEM knowledge to get products using less water in agriculture.

We generate energy by solar panels to convert solar energy into energy and we generate the stored energy by transferring it to the battery. When the humidity in the soil falls below the normal level, the battery activates and activates the cooling system. At this time, the moisture collector sheets begin to cool. Moisture in between hits this plate and turns into water. Water droplets accumulated in the plate and they are collected in the water container at the bottom. We send the water in this container to the drip system by the pump. In this way, we use energy with a closed-circuit energy system and turn the moisture in the air into water and water our field.

Intelligent Greenhouse Automation

At this stage, our students moved to the design department. They designed intelligent greenhouse automation with arduino for quality agriculture and irrigation. With the circuit they installed, they designed a greenhouse that accumulates rainwater or uses the water requirement by storing the humidity in the air. Smart greenhouse makes controlled irrigation according to the moisture value in the soil. It works to grow quality products by lighting Day and night with the right lighting technique. Students created circuit diagrams of the greenhouse they designed with Fritzing. Then they did the coding for the design with the Arduino program and the coding of greenhouse automation. They prepare a prototype prepared for the application. And our project is working.
